- French and European furniture abounds including a palace-size Boulle credenza.
Two paintings by famous English artist Robert Alexander Hillingford are major highlights of Phil Caldwell’s latest auction from 11am Sunday at 13 Howitt Road, Caulfield. Originally from the home of Bradmill chairman Sir Robert Webster, they were part of the famous Donna Rogowski collection before being purchased by the current owner.
Hillingford was well known for his dramatic war scenes, many of them painted between 1864 and 1893. Prints of his works currently sell in London for about £500 but it is very rare to see his original works for sale. The Caldwell auction also contains several Hugh Sawrey oil paintings, eight Pro Hart oils (including the large Preparing for Race Day with an estimate of $20,000) and works by Ray Crooke and Robert Dickerson. One of the more unusual furniture items is a marble and emporite designer extension dining table that seats 24 and was tailor-made for this 90-square home complete with in-ground undercover pool.

There are several Royal Worcester items including a John Stinton vase, a large Sedgley vase and a pair of the largest Raby vases ever made. Unusual is an 1850s French Kingwood tantalus with 18 original liqueur glasses and four decanters overlaid with 22 carat gilding. Several palace clocks, including one by Raingo – maker to King Louis Phillipe – should attract plenty of attention. Viewing 10am-6pm Friday and Saturday and 9.30am-11am Sunday.
